She was the first to bring Tejano to mainstream culture. She was a rising star who's tragic death threw it into turmoil. It is also the case when a brilliant, genial young performer is lost too quickly and is buried, many mourned the greatness that she had yet to reach. Fans have worked harder over the years in order to ensure that her legacy is kept alive. Selena was the Tejano singer who tragically killed by a gunshot accident caused the Latino reaction that could be likened to the reaction to John Lennon's deaths. An enormously popular singer in Latino communities throughout North America her music crossed lines of cultural difference to affect the lives of children as well as old. Selena was a hot and flamboyant stage performer who was sometimes referred to by her as the Latina Madonna. Off-stage Selena was an outstanding role model, as she actively participated in antidrug and AIDS campaigning.
